DNS is the "Domain Name System".

Every computer or server is known on the internet as an IP address, like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where x is any number).

As IP addresses are hard to remember, you type in a URL (www.whatever.com), which the DNS system translates to an IP address, so you can contact the appropriate server (computer). All this is transparent for the user.
